Just Say No

So whenever the girls go to any sort of appointment these days they come away with some sort of trinket. A toy, a sticker, crayons, a pencil, toothbrushes, sunglasses, you name it, we've seen it.

It's been getting a little out of hand though. I get that doctors and dentists want the kids to have something to look forward to and frankly they may need to "reward" (bribe) some more reluctant kids.

Lately, the things that Tori loves the most though are not the bribes, uh - I mean rewards, but the procedure leftovers. The medical type things that the doctors, nurses, or assistants use then (you would think) toss.

But nooooo..... they are all too happy to give these things to Tori.

So she happily collects these little nose pinchers (see picture below), mouth guard things (they use these on the pulmonary tests), the little mouth and nose covers for the nebulizers, etc. Yesterday someone gave her a roll of gauze so she could practice being a doctor at home! Completely unsolicited.

Her doctor kit is full to overflowing with these things and she uses them for other things too as you can see. Tweets the bird is using the nose clamps as headphones. So while Tori is doing her part to help the environment by keeping more stuff out of landfills, someone is going to have to dig her out of her clutter in about 20 years - because the kid just can't say no to the junk.

Jerky

Seriously - I had no idea that beef jerky was so popular. Wow.

Art

Tori drew this yesterday while we were waiting to see the doctor. She
drew the butterfly then the clouds.

Then she decided that it was going to rain and the little guy needed
an umbrella. That's my favorite part.

Gifts

I guess accepting flowers from strangers is ok - just not candy, right?

The girls often get little gifts when we are out and about. Sometimes
cookies, stickers, small things like that. But last week Tori was
beside herself when the nice woman at the grocery florist area gave
her a beautiful rose.

Then she very kindly gave Delaney one too. Aren't they lovely?

Fun at the Totten's

Saturday the girls had a great time with family
at their aunt and uncle's.

I took this shot of them running back after dropping
off some tiny baby frogs near the bank of the pond.

Aerial Photography

I showed Tori this picture taken from the plane when taking off in San
Jose and she said "Hey, it almost looks like a map!". Yes, yes it does
Tori.

Fishing in Half Moon Bay

My work group went on a rock cod fishing trip today in Half Moon Bay.
We started fast but then slowed down and ended up with 34 fish. Here's
the boat.

Spicing up the PB&J

So I've been trying to do something a little different and interesting in the girls' lunches this week.

Today I made them a regular old peanut butter and jelly on
wheat bread.

Then I used a large circular cookie cutter to cut it out.

You can do any big shape - sometimes I make them sandwiches in butterfly, star, heart, or leaf shapes.

The fun thing has been using these stencils to add designs.

Today I used cinnamon to make music notes.
Yesterday it was cocoa to make smilie faces.

Quality photography

Here is a blurry pic of Tori's final choices.

She had a hard time narrowing it down. At first she had chosen several special things like seashells, rocks, charms, and a small tinkerbell doll.

When I pointed out that those things might be a little tough to adhere to construction paper and that she may not get them back for a while, she decided to look again.

Her final (blurry) choices were:

a picture of picachu (her favorite pokemon and because she loves to play pokemon with her sister)

a dolphin that she colored and cut out (because she loves dolphins and got to see dolphins on vacation this summer)

a package of flower seeds (because she loves to garden with me and she loves the way flowers smell)

a picture of tinkerbell that she colored and cut out (she loves the peter pan movies and that was the first novel type book that we read together)

a penguin card (she adores all things having to do with the arctic and antarctic - we read books about penguins, puffins, polar bears, etc. all the time)

and finally small sparkly jewels - I call her my little magpie - the kid is always always always finding small sparkly things. She loves tiny things, the sparklier the better.

A few of Tori's favorite things

Tori made a little art project for school this week too. It is going
to be a part of a paper quilt art display with the kindergartners
favorite things on each sheet.

Breakfast on the road

Since we were in a rush this morning and we have a not entirely short jaunt to school in the mornings - we picked up breakfast on the way. The girls love these little chicken biscuits and a carton of OJ.

Delaney's also proudly holding up the drawing of our house that she made as part of her homework for this week. She did a really nice job - even including some of the flowers out front.

A bit of a late start today

It is not unusual to find Tori sleeping sideways, twisted, half off the bed, or as you see here with her head at the bottom and her feet at the top.

She called me about 4:00 this morning crying - saying that she was all twisted up and couldn't figure out how to get back to the pillow.

I helped her get settled but I guess it didn't last!

Picachu's contraption

Does anyone else have to keep these contraptions forever (ok, it just
seems like forever) because the kids don't want to take them apart?

I've started going back to my old method of taking pictures to save
and then saying again that we need to take it apart.

Tori didn't buy it though.

She just said that it was picachu's and it would hurt his feelings if
we took it apart.

Gorgeous flower arrangement

We just had a flower delivery here.

This picture doesn't really show how creative this arrangement is. It's from my favorite florist - The Purple Poppy.

It's full of liatris, lillies, bells of ireland, gerbera daisies, roses, richly colored carnations, larkspur (I think) and equally lovely foliage. The vase and ribbon are contrasting colors and are very modern.

We love having flowers in the house.

Thanks Chris! Even all the way in California - you can make people happy in NC.

Thirsty duck

After trying the coffee, the duck (who is only 8 by the way),
then had to have a sip of Tori's drink.
