eBay Listings

I've added a link in the sidebar to items I'm currently selling on eBay. There are a couple of items up now, but since I'm not a big seller, this list will typically be empty.

I have no idea why you'd care, and I really put it there more as a convenience to me, but take a look if you're curious. I don't discriminate; I'll take anyone's money.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy MOVIE!

One of my favorite books is Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". It's a really funny sci-fi novel that should be required reading for everyone on the planet. Now it's going to be a movie!

Not much info at the site yet and even the dates on the site and in the brief trailer conflict with each other, but apparently it's coming. I really hope they do this right. I think making a movie out of a well known book like this is quite difficult because so many people already have visions in their head of what Ford, Arthur, Trillian, and Zaphod Beeblebrox look like. You're not going to match everyone's personal incarnation of Zaphod - a "two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out to lunch president of the galaxy". So it should be interesting to see what they come up with. The trailer gives no hint.

What You Might Have Been Missing

Sure, you, like most, probably visit the same web sites frequently. But there's more out there. What have you been missing? One of the great benefits of the internet is the breadth of information available. You can find several pages on just about any topic. Now you can even find blogs on topics you are interested in. No matter how focused the subject or how small the audience.

But what about the big stuff? What are the most popular sites out there? Sure, you can guess ones like Google or CNN or Yahoo. But what else is everyone looking at except you? Don't be left behind. Take a look at Alexa's list of the Top 100 English Language Web Sites (calculated using this formula). You're sure to find some gems that countless thousands couldn't live without.

Google Mapology 101

Google adds yet another service today with the beta announcement of Google Maps. Don't pay much attention to the "beta" label as most of their products are still in beta. I think they just mean that they're still actively developing them and you should expect things to change for the better.

There are still some features missing, but it's certainly a different twist on mapping from Mappoint or Mapquest. It's cool that you can click and drag on the map, so it's more like you're holding a real paper map in your hands. I wonder how long before they integrate this with the 3-D satellite imagery from Keyhole, which they recently purchased? That would be really cool.

In short, "Looks good; will only get better". Check out the Google Maps Tour.

Super Bowl Commercials

In case you missed the Super Bowl commercials, iFilm's got your back. You can view all of the commercials plus a few that the network rejected in their Super Bowl Ads Showcase. And TiVo issued their report of the most TiVo'd moments of the game and of the commercials. Not surprisingly, the GoDaddy.com ad came out on top.

Baby Got Book!

After just re-reading my Hip Hop Hallelujah post, this video almost made me fall out of my chair. It's DJ Southpaw's Christian rendition of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back". But this one is titled "Baby Got Book". It's dead on. Hilarious.

Be warned that it is a 20MB file (about 4.5 minutes) and it's encoded in DiVx. I had trouble playing from the original site (linked above) but there's also a mirror site. You will need to get the DiVx codec if you don't have it, and saving the video to my disk and then playing it worked better. It's worth it. If you don't know who Sir Mix-a-Lot is, then don't bother because it won't be nearly as funny.

Happy Birthday Ivey!

Yesterday, we took Delaney and Victoria to Ivey's birthday party. She's four now and everyone had a great time! The girls especially loved the face painting and Mimi the Clown's magic act. After her pet rabbit magically appeared, the kids all got to pet it and even hold it. Top it all off with cake, ice cream, and a giant lollipop and you've got a wonderful birthday party.

The Holy Grail in LEGO

This is great. See a portion of Monty Python and the Holy Grail in LEGO. Here's more info and here's the direct link to the movie - it's only a few minutes (QuickTime player required).

From Blog To Book

Here's a new service from BlogBinders that will turn your blog into a book. You give them the URL of your blog and they download all entries and put them in a book format. It gets indexed automatically and you get to select the style, cover art, binding, write a foreword, etc. They provide you an electronic proof copy (PDF, I think) and then they print one for you. Cost depends on the size of your blog and binding options, but looks very affordable.

I think this is pretty cool. I've been blogging almost a year now and it would be great to have a hardcopy just for archive purposes. But they don't quite have what I want (yet). I'd like it printed with images and formatting retained. I'd like footnotes for all URLs. I'd like comments included. I'd like the whole thing printed in color but that may jack up the price too much.

From their Help link, it looks like they're already working on most of these features. I'll keep an eye on them.
