One Lesson I Learned This Weekend

One lesson I learned this weekend is that I have no future as a drywaller. I finally made time (over three days) to apply the first coat of
joint compound (or "mud") to the
drywall we hung in the
garage. I won't say how long ago we actually hung the drywall, but it's hard to find time to do these jobs. The inclination was certainly there - the garage has been a mess for a year now - but the time to do it was missing.
I also learned the skill to do it was missing as well. Covering the screw holes was pretty easy. I got used to that quickly and there were
a lot of screw holes (as those who helped hang it can attest). But mudding and taping the joints proved more of a challenge. I got it done, but I don't think I did a good job. But hey, it's the garage, not the formal living room, right?
And this is just the first coat. The second coat should make things a little better. And I'm hoping to be able to skip the third coat -- again, this is the garage, right? I just want to paint it and get things on the wall and in place.
Hmmm, now to schedule that second coat of joint compound and painting. Let me see, I think I have openings in late July and mid September....

Frags-R-Us

Yesterday I had the privilege of playing multi-player Halo via System Link. I played lots of DOOM Deathmatch over the LAN years ago, but this was the first time with Halo. We linked up two Xboxes and had 5 players. Instead of playing on small TVs, we played on large 6-8 foot projector screens. Now, that's Halo done right.
Sadly, my skill level left much to be desired. In the last game, I think I had 16 points. My teammates had 1 point and -1 point, so it could have been worse. The lack of skill did not detract in any way from the fun of fragging four of your friends - whether they were on my team or not!

Useless Error Messages
Doesn't everyone just love useless error messages?
Windows is famous for them. They even provide the kernel exception, hex memory address, and maybe even a traceback. All of that is completely useless to the end user that just clicked their mouse on a nice little button and is now perplexed as to why this message box popped up and his entire system seems to be shutting down.
There's also the
BSOD (
Blue Screen of Death) that is filled with hex. And the old favorite,
GPF (
General Protection Fault). These both mean that something went horribly wrong, you have no idea what, we have very little idea what and couldn't explain it to you anyway and it may or may not have been your fault and it may or may not happen again. Reboot.
But today, while actually trying to do some work (I know it's hard to believe if you've ever visited the
PezOfficeCam, but I do work occasionally), I encountered this error message on a web page. It wasn't even
Microsoft related.
Error:
There was no error.
Please go back and try again.
Well, now I'm confused. Is this a Jedi Mind Trick or something?

TiVo reports loss, but beats estimates by 9 cents a share

I guess this is
good news for
TiVo as they approach profitability. Though I have seen some concerns lately about how long the relationship with
DirecTV will last and if DirecTV will develop their own box like many other providers are doing.
Judging both by the quality of other boxes (
Dish,
TimeWarner) and the length of time it takes DirecTV to roll out new releases from TiVo (still no HMO for DirecTiVo users), I'd say the consumer would greatly benefit from sticking with TiVo. TiVo also has the brand recognition at a level akin to that of
Xerox and
Kleenex, where recording something on your personal video recorder is now called "tivoing".

Telemarketers on your Cell Phone?
I don't have a personal cell phone. I just recently got a work cell phone that they pay for. I typically keep it with me in case they or my family need to get in touch with me. I admit that it definitely comes in handy sometimes. But if this actually happens, there's no way I'll carry around a cell phone just to talk to telemarketers:
From
http://www.consumerworld.org/
Your Cell Phone Number May be Made Public!
Attention cell phone users: brace yourself for
telemarketing calls and text ads on your mobile phone after its number is made public later this year. Worse, in most cases, you have to pay for those incoming calls and messages. A cell trade group will soon publish a public directory of cell phone numbers, and that means your cell number may no longer be private. (Verizon Wireless says it won't turn over its customer list.) Consumers Union is asking Congress to amend the CAN-SPAM Act to forbid unsolicited text message ads from being sent to cell phones. (This is a huge problem in Europe and Asia.) How do you feel about the possibility of getting telemarketing calls and unsolicited text messages on your cell phone? Add your comments [63].

Tips on Home Wiring
Structured wiring is a Good Thing. But here's a tip:
If you ever build a house and have PVC conduit installed in the walls to make it easier to add additional cables from the attic to the crawlspace be sure to inspect the conduit to make sure there is sufficient clearance between the pipe and the surrounding structure to actually allow cables to enter and exit.
If you don't you might find yourself in the dark, cramped crawlspace, crawling over to find the PVC conduit. Then you might move the insulation away with fish tape in hand, ready to run some CAT 5 to network your Xbox. You might be unluck enough to realize that this job is about to get a whole lot longer than you'd hoped it would be. The 2 inch pipe might, just might, be a quarter inch off the sill plate. You could probably snake a couple of wires through there at the risk of kinking them.
At this point, you'd sit there debating what to do. Then you'd have to crawl back out to find some tools - or makeshift ones. Finally, you'd end up back in the crawlspace with part of a hacksaw blade you chopped in two and clamped in a pair of vise grips. Now you have about a foot of space to take short little 2-inch strokes over your head against the insulation to try to cut the pipe shorter while sort of lying down and trying to hold the pipe securely with the other hand.
This will require several periods of sawing and taking breaks and sawing and taking breaks. And wondering if you could have gotten and extension cord and somehow fit a power tool in there. There will be much sweating as well, but what did you expect - it's a hot day. Finally, you'll cut through and then lie down for a short rest. Then you'll push the fish tape up the pipe and into the attic.
Once in the attic with all the necessary tools and cables, you will realize that it is WAY too hot in here and you are too exhausted and your legs too shaky to walk 30 feet across the ceiling joists buried in 16 inches of insulation to get to the fish tape and complete this portion of the job. Thinking about one slip of the foot taking you down through the ceiling would be enough for you to call it a day. And did I mention the sweating? Attics get really hot around here.
So you might want to make your job a little simpler and just make sure you're happy with the clearance while it's still someone else's problem. Or even pay them extra to wire anything and everything to everwhere.
Not that I would know or anything.

Tips on Buying a Dining Room Table
When you buy a dining room table and the guys come out to deliver it - or even when the guy comes back to replace and fix things blemishes that you found earlier -- these would be good times to have them insert *both* leaves and any other options you might have purchased along with the table. Just to be sure. Merely inspecting the leaves for scratches is not sufficient.
Otherwise, you might find yourself underneath said table with
various hammers trying to gently coax the table into opening up further to accept a second leaf just an hour or two before your dinner guests are set to arrive.
You may find yourself beating on that table -- all without any visible damage, of course -- until you are just about ready to give up. Then, if you are lucky, it may budge just a little and then break free, allowing you to expand the table and seat everyone.
Better to let the delivery guys have that bit of fun. Lesson learned.

TiVo-proof Advertising? Yikes!
Oh, no! Let's hope this doesn't catch on. I'm sure everyone will be eager to add pop-ups and flashing, rotating banners to their network TV viewing as well. Just imagine your nice 36-inch TV being turned into a 21-inch TV with a large banner advertisement on the bottom third of the screen for the entire show!
Don't advertisers realize that if the commercials are compelling enough, even TiVo owners will watch? I Tivo'ed the SuperBowl just to watch the commercials. I fast-forwarded through most of the game (though this year I was mostly disappointed in the commercials).
New TV Network To Take On TiVo and Other DVRs
"Ripe Entertainment is introducing a free "on-demand" cable network, called RipeTV, which will have advertising embedded into its shows. It has seven different types of advertising that will not be able to be fast-forwarded through when recorded on a PVR. RipeTV's CEO, Ryan Magnussen, calls it "TiVo-proof."
New ads include a 3-D animated advertiser logo or graphic to open and close the show, an animated logo occupying the lower third of the screen, a "video skin" or graphic frame with the advertisers brand framed around the show, video billboards in the lower third, strategically placed spots and long-form commercials. The ads are more like magazine advertisements, in a video magazine setting. "Labels: tivo

The End of TechTV

Yes, it's yet another post about the end of
TechTV. I just saw
Leo's blog post about the end of
Call for Help and had to link to it here.
The short summary is that he'll still do the 90-second spots on
The Screen Savers and perhaps another network will pick up Call for Help. Worse, it sounds like not too many of the crew will be staying on for
G4techTV. So, even though Screen Savers will be around, we're not sure who will be hosting.

G4techTV. What a silly name.

Investigators said 44-year-old Jeffrey Taylor held up a postal clerk Wednesday to get some grocery money. He got away with just $100.
Taylor is accused of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Because the alleged crime involved the U.S. mail, he also could face federal prosecution.

Little Storage for the EMC Engineer
I work for EMC, predominately a storage company. They give me an email account on that atrocity they call Microsoft Exchange.
As I mentioned yesterday I also now have a Google Gmail account. This is completely free and they don't know me from Adam.
Google gives me 1024MB of storage space.
EMC - the disk storage company - gives its own employee a measly 65MB of space. 85% less than Gmail provides for no charge.
What gives?
What's worse is that the 65MB goes much faster than you might think with everyone sending around a couple of phrases of text encapsulated in a PowerPoint presentation.
I guess I'm just tired of having to clean out my work email and really embracing Gmail's concept. And don't get me started on the other Exchange "shortcomings", to put it nicely.
I'm off to clean my EMC mailbox again...

Bidding for Email
...or Gmail in this case. Google's recently announced email service is still in beta where only a limited number of people are allowed to sign up and it is by invitation only. The lucky few (I'm sure it's thousands) get 1000MB of storage. The Google idea is that you don't have to delete or even sort your email. You can just Google search it!
The web interface has a few other nice features like conversation threading and auto-complete and such.
Once you're signed up, some members have received an invitation they can send to a friend that allows them to join. Well, there are a lot of enterprising individuals out there, and the trend now is to put these invitations up on ebay. Sell your invitation to the highest bidder!
A check today shows several listings going for around $20. If you think about it, that's not bad to have an excellent chance for getting yourname@gmail.com instead of yname123_45@gmail.com or some nonsense. However, this
eBay seller made out far better than $20. Would you pay that much for an email address?
Of course, there may be other ways to get an account. I got an invitation because we use Blogger.com for this page and Blogger is now owned by Google. In fact, I may make Gmail my default email interface soon.

Xbox Media Center
OK, I know some of you (yes, all three of you that actually read this!) are tired of hearing about my XBOX and the hacking of it. But here's another hack success anyway!
Last night I installed the beta release of XBMC - Xbox Media Center. It's sweet. It's free. It's open source. This basically turns my $150 Xbox (plus cost of mods) into a Home Theater Center. It will play all of my music files with digital output, display all of my picture files (even in HD if I had such a set), and even play movies stored on the network (it already played DVDs and VCDs), plus it will tell you the current weather conditions and forecast.
So my audio/video components have been reduced to a 5.1 receiver/tuner, a DirecTiVo, and a hacked Xbox. And I've got more capabilities than before.
Now it's time to pull some cable to give that Xbox a permanent 100Mb connection.

"TechTV, You're Fired!"
No, this is not a bad Donald Trump joke. I don't think The Donald had anything to do with this.
Comcast had recently bought out TechTV and everyone knew changes were coming, but does that make it any easier to swallow? NO.
Yesterday, Comcast told all 285 San Francisco TechTV employees, "You're fired!"
They've got a couple of months warning (as required by law). Nobody knows what the future of TechTV shows will be. Some employees will be offered jobs at another location. Will The ScreenSavers survive?
Here's Leo's entry on the action. Lots of comments there as well. (If you see a big blank space for some reason, highlight it to read the text. I was having trouble with this link.)

Xbox Conversion
The Xbox Conversion is done! This hack was a bit more involved than my previous TiVo hack to add more disk space, but it was well worth it.
My Xbox now has a flashable BIOS (Xecuter2 4893.06) that is externally switchable, a new dashboard (EvoX), and a 160GB hard drive. Took a bit of research, but Google makes finding things quick and easy. Then you just have to sort through all the various stories, tutorials, and experiences to determine the right things to do, how to do it, and where to actually get the software you need that everyone is talking about but can't tell you where to get it from.
I'm just starting to load and setup software on it and I still need to run a permanent wired Ethernet connection to its location.

I'm a Below Average Satellite Subscriber
Apparently, I'm cheap when it comes to satellite TV.
As much as I love DirecTV and especially the integrated TiVo, my monthly bill is around $50. I mean I was an early adopter and paid (gulp) about $800 dollars for my first Sony Advanced DirecTV setup. That was years ago and they're now giving away stuff better than that for free. I certainly don't think of myself as cheap.
But according to this article where DirecTV reported quarterly results, "Average monthly revenue was $63.60 per subscriber, compared with $59.10 a year ago."
So either everyone else pays a lot more than I do, or they've found a way to make more money off me than I'm paying them.
Either way, I'll never go back to Time Warner Cable!

I have been eager to see an exhibition of Chihuly's for ages now. I remember vividly the first time I saw his art. It was a special on a television show and it just blew me away (no pun intended there). Art glass has always caught my eye and been something that I love, but Dale Chihuly takes it to this other realm of reality. I have never seen anything like the scope of his work before.
Now I am making plans to attend the art in the garden exhibit currently installed at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. A very lucky woman I know is a member there and she and her son have already attended this exhibit. Her son is about Delaney's age and he is fascinated by it, so I hope that she will love it as well. If you can't make it, at least check out these sites and be in awe.

That picture was one of those rare times when the camera is in the right place at the right time and the shutter releases at the right moment. I love that Victoria appears to be applauding the whole event, Delaney is giving extra effort by leaning slightly in, and Caleb is trying desperately to avoid everything by closing his eyes and backing away.
As promised, here are pictures from Caleb's Birthday Party last Saturday. Better late than never.Labels: family
